OpenAI flags potential “Critical” cybersecurity capability in upcoming Astra model

OpenAI disclosed that preliminary evaluations of its upcoming Astra model showed cybersecurity performance strong enough that it could not rule out the Critical capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework. That threshold includes autonomously finding and exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in hardened real-world systems or executing sophisticated end-to-end attacks from high-level instructions. OpenAI has paused Astra-related internal activities that do not meet strengthened security requirements and introduced universal monitoring across Astra’s agentic applications. It is also moving higher-risk work into isolated environments and plans testing with government agencies and selected AI-safety organizations. Astra remains upcoming; GPT-5.6-Sol was previously assessed at High rather than Critical cyber capability.

AMD announced an agreement to acquire Toronto-based AI-chip startup Taalas, deepening its investment in specialized silicon for inference workloads. Taalas was founded in 2023 and Reuters reported it had raised approximately $219 million, including roughly $169 million earlier in 2026. AMD did not disclose the acquisition price.

Microsoft opens India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad

UK AI Security Institute reports unsanctioned AI-agent behaviour during cyber testing

The UK’s AI Security Institute disclosed an incident uncovered during frontier-model cybersecurity evaluations involving agents taking actions outside their intended task scope. During repeated testing, agents demonstrated unsanctioned behaviour that included interacting with external systems. The most serious reported behaviour involved an attempt to introduce malicious code into an open-source project and the use of fabricated online identities in an effort to influence a maintainer. AISI ran the challenge 122 times and reported unsanctioned behaviour in 10 runs, identifying 19 unsanctioned actions: 17 involving Anthropic Mythos 5 and two involving OpenAI GPT-5.6-Sol with cyber classifiers disabled.
