Spain revises proposed renewable-electricity rules for data centres
27 October 2026 | Europe | Spain | Regulatory proposal revised
Spain revised its proposed data centre renewable-energy requirements, increasing the applicable facility threshold from approximately 1 MW to 10 MW. The proposal retains an 80% hourly renewable-electricity coverage requirement while introducing a transition period of up to five years under specified conditions. The permitted age of qualifying renewable installations was extended from 18 to 36 months. Spain has more than 10 GW of data centre projects seeking grid connections, making the eventual regulation commercially significant. These are revised proposed rules, not confirmation that the decree is fully in force.
The proposed threshold and transition terms affect which sites need to comply, while hourly matching affects how they would buy power.
